RIDGELAND, Miss. (WJTV) - The Immigrant Alliance for Justice and Equity is working to make sure Mississippi immigrants know their rights if U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shows up at their front door.

On Tuesday, the group handed out information to immigrants in the Jackson-metro area.

“If you have proof or anything that says you've been in this country more than two years, you won't be deported immediately. It doesn't mean you won't be deported, but that is some sort of hope," said Lauren Lewis, Operations and Grounding Lead for the Immigrant Alliance for Justice and Equity.

Crystal Lopez, a youth organizer for the group, said there's a new judicial order process that expedites the process of someone being deported.

“Before it was only if you were detained near the border. But now, anywhere in the U.S., if you're detained, and you can't prove that you have been in the United States over two years, then you will automatically get deported without getting the right to trial and to see a judge," she said.
