PEARL, Miss. (WJTV) - The City of Pearl made a controversial hire on Tuesday.

Jeremy Rast was hired as a Pearl police officer. In June 2024, Rast was an officer with the Richland Police Department and was caught on camera making "derogatory slurs."

In the video, Rast said, “Well why don’t you go back to Mexico or something? Whatever. I don’t care. Just get the (expletive) out of Richland for me, please. Because I don’t… I do not like y’all being here.”

The video also showed the officer calling the man an “illegal.” He also told the man to get out of the city, or he would find any reason to arrest them. Rast also mentioned that police have been called to the property several times.

Rast was relieved of his duties in Richland for his behavior. He resigned from his position as a patrol officer.

Pearl Police Chief Nick McLendon, who formerly served as the Richland police chief, released a statement about hiring Rast.

While I acknowledge and do not condone his previous actions or statements, I do not believe that he should be condemned for the remainder of his professional career. After countless meetings, thoughtful consideration and prayers, I felt compelled to give Jeremy Rast another opportunity in law enforcement.

McLendon said he has an open-door policy. If any citizen wishes to voice their concerns about an issue with the department, they're invited to schedule a meeting.
