MADISON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) - A former Madison County detention employee was arrested for animal cruelty after deputies said they found 45 dogs and four horses that were suffering from malnutrition.

Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker said deputies were notified on Thursday, October 24 about issues regarding animal cruelty. The incident occurred at a home on Old Canton Road, and the suspect, Wesley Keyser, was arrested at the scene.

Tucker said the animals were not being provided any cover from the weather. The animals were taken to the Webster Animal Shelter in Madison and to several veterinarians for care. Tucker said the goal is to rehome the animals.

“Keyser will be charged with animal cruelty for each animal that was removed from the premises,” said Tucker. “The dogs and horses were living in deplorable conditions, and it is our hope they will be matched with new owners. For those who hurt our animals, beware that we will take every legal measure to make sure you pay the price for hurting the defenseless. This will never be tolerated in Madison County. Keyser, a former detention employee (employee for about nine months), was arrested and terminated from his job at the scene.”

Keyser's bond was set at $46,000, according to the Madison County Detention Center's website.
