JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - Montyne "Tina" Clay appears to be on track to win the special election runoff for Jackson's Ward 2 council seat.

The unofficial vote tallies showed Clay leading with 1,509 votes. Her opponent, Marcus Cheatham, secured 920 votes.

“I'm grateful that I won. I'm appreciative of all the people that helped me. There were a lot of people behind the scenes, and I just want to say thank you to them all," said Clay.

She has plans to focus on economic development and crime. Clay will serve the remainder of former Councilwoman Angelique Lee's term. Lee resigned after she was charged and pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery.

The Election Commission's resolution board is expected to meet on Wednesday, October 23 to confirm the votes. The election is expected to be certified on Wednesday, October 30.
