BYRAM, Miss. (WJTV) - The City of Byram voted on Thursday to approve Phase I of the Big Creek Sewer Interceptor Project.

Hemphill Construction was awarded the project, which consists of installing a new section of a 42-inch sewer pipe along Big Creek. This will be the main pipe carrying wastewater to the Trahon Wastewater Treatment Facility in Jackson.

The City of Byram will get rid of the current lagoon system, and the new system will be gravity fed and will not require pumps.

Jeff Green, the construction project engineer for the Pickering Firm, said the total length for Phase I will be about 2,400-feet and will lay as deep as 40-feet in some areas.

Byram Mayor Richard White said part of Phase I requires running the pipe under Interstate 55, and it will eventually extend out to Highway 18.

“It's a big, big deal with our city because we're in a situation where our growth of our cities, we need more wastewater opportunities. And also, certainly the infrastructure construction of our city is very important. This is a 2.5-mile sewer interceptor,” White stated.

The city is investing $30 million for the whole project, and it will be done in phases. Phase I will cost almost $7 million.

The project is expected to start in October 2024.
