JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - Illegal dumping continues to be a concern across the City of Jackson.
Councilwoman Angelique Lee, Ward 2, said she's working to address illegal dumping in her ward, including the area on College Hill. She feels positive about working with other city agencies to get rid of the eyesores.
"As you can see, when you got a call about some illegal dumping, we were on the site with crews ready to pick it up. And so, that's one of the great things we have is positive relationships with agencies and departments, such as Solid Waste, as well as the Jackson Police Department. They're also out on the scene to to identify and help us clean up this mess, identify the perpetrators, and then hopefully hold them accountable," Lee stated.
The Neighborhood Enhancement Team and the Solid Waste Division are driving across the city, looking for those illegal dumping hotspots.
“It's definitely frustrating. We're doing everything we can. We've put in 100 work tickets, and it's as frustrating when we see the crews come out and actually put in their manual labor to pick up these items that people could actually put on the curb and get picked up with a phone call to Solid Waste. So it's, it's disheartening, but it's sad that people, you know, treat our streets as a dumping ground," said Lee.
Roosevelt Turner, who owns property in Ward 2, said people do not respect the property of others. He said they've put trash on his own property.
“A lot of the illegal dumping is either on property that someone else is on someone else own or on some of the city's properties along the driveways," Turner said.
Lee said those who dump illegally in the capital city need to be held accountable.
“If we have a tag number, they need to go to jail. They need to have a fine. Something needs to happen so that they will stop. It needs to have a widespread message that Jackson is not the place that you can dump, but instead it's the opposite," she said.
