JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - The man found guilty of killing a local community activist in 2022 could soon be sentenced to life in prison.

William "Polo" Edwards represented himself during his retrial this week. A jury convicted Edwards of first-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm on Thursday.

Robert Davis was killed at Shadow Robinson's Clinton home in May 2022.

Matt Steffey, a law professor at the Mississippi College School of Law, said when a defendant represents himself, he's at a disadvantage.

“I think it's the fight of your life with one hand behind your back," Steffey said.

Edwards' first trial ended with a mistrial in August 2023.

“I think it would have been a grand victory if he had a juror or two hold out and he hung the trial again. I thought he had very little chance at persuading 12 citizens he was entirely innocent of the charges," Steffey stated.

Robinson testified that she called 911 after she saw Davis lying face down on the floor of her home. She said she had a romantic relationship with Edwards at one point.

Edwards will be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17.
