HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) - The man accused of killing a local community activist in 2022 will have co-counsel representation during his retrial.

Judge Eleanor Faye Peterson previously approved a motion for Brandon Dorsey to withdraw as the counsel for William “Polo” Edwards. Dorsey had been appointed as Edwards’ attorney in November 2023.

Edwards will now actively participate alongside a new attorney in the retrial. During a hearing on December 6, 2024, Peterson said this is the only solution the court has at this time. The co-representation gives Edwards the opportunity to give an opening statement and closing argument, if he chooses.

“The court did reach out to an attorney, Mr. Mullinax, and he did indicate that he would be willing to serve as a as your co-counsel. That's different from appointed counsel because appointed counsel is your lead counsel," said Peterson.

The judge said the court reached out to Attorney Abby Robinson about representing Edwards, but she declined.

Edwards is accused of killing Better Men Society founder Robert Davis inside Shadow Robinson’s Clinton home on May 1, 2022.

Edwards was arrested in connection to the case after a chase in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 3, 2022. He was indicted for murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm in Hinds County. Edwards pled not guilty.

Edwards’ first trial ended with a mistrial in August 2023. His retrial was scheduled for December 9, 2024.
