JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - A suspect was injured during an officer-involved shooting in Jackson after he allegedly fired shots at an 18-wheeler driver.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said the shooting happened on I-220 on Tuesday after two 18-wheelers were involved in an accident. Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said officers were responding to a hit-and-run incident where shots were fired.
According to Wade, a man in a stolen Volvo got out of the vehicle and began firing shots at one of the 18-wheeler drivers. Wade believes the vehicle was stolen in another county.
The police chief said officers chased the unidentified suspect to McCain Avenue.
“He brandished the weapon, pointed at the narcotics detectives. They fired upon him, striking him in the lower extremities. He appears to be recovering from those injuries," said Wade.
Martin said the officers were not injured during the shooting. Jackson police said they recovered the stolen vehicle and the suspect's weapon.
Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) are investigating the shooting and will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General's Office.
