JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - The JTRAN union workers' strike has come to an end.

Charles Tornes, Jr., president of the local Amalgamated Transit Union, told WJTV 12 News that the strike ended on Tuesday, September 17. He said service would resume on Wednesday, September 18.

Union members said they reached a tentative agreement with contractor MV Transportation that meets the union’s demands for fair pay, job security, safety improvements, and strong benefits.

“Our members stood strong and united throughout this process. MV tried to divide us,” said Tornes. “This strike shows that our members are willing to lay it all on the line for justice. I want to thank our riders, elected officials, and all our allies for coming out and standing with us.”

JTRAN suspended service across Jackson on Wednesday, September 4 due to the strike. Union members said they went on strike due to safety concerns.

MV Transportation has managed the City of Jackson’s fixed route and paratransit services since January 2024.

“We are pleased to announce that the JTRAN union strike has officially ended, and regular service is resuming. We are grateful to all parties involved for reaching a resolution and would like to thank the public for their patience during this time. We look forward to providing uninterrupted service and continuing to meet the needs of our community," officials with the City of Jackson said.

“MV Transportation is pleased to announce that an agreement with ATU Local 1208 has been reached and ratified by its members, bringing the recent JTRAN strike to a close. We particularly want to thank Mayor Lumumba for his thoughtful and balanced efforts to bring this strike to a close for the good of the citizens of Jackson. We are very glad to welcome our employees back to work, where they can continue doing what they love — providing safe and reliable transportation for the citizens of Jackson. Our commitment to safety remains our top priority, and we are eager to resume services with the highest standards in place. We look forward to serving the Jackson community once again, ensuring that passengers can rely on us for their daily commutes and their public transportation needs," officials with MV Transportation said.
