JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - Firefighters responded to a fire at a former Jackson elementary school.

The fire occurred in a portable building on the campus of Baker Elementary School, located on East Santa Clair Street, on Wednesday, August 28.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In April 2024, the Jackson Public School District (JPD) Board of Trustees approved a recommendation to demolish Baker Elementary, along with two other schools.

Officials recommended that the buildings be demolished due to a lack of interest from potential buyers for redevelopment. They also said the district’s inability to ensure the vacant buildings’ security further contributed to the recommendation.
